Background
As part of Royal College of Art's 2024-2025 Grand Challenge, a yearly interdisciplinary collaborative project dedicated to developing creative and innovative solutions to a new and emerging major global issue, student teams were provided a borough and encouraged to explore ways to help local communities develop resilient systems to the challenges they currently face. This past year's theme was Design Resilience and our team's focus was in the London Borough of Sutton.
OUTCOME
Our team formed Hands in Harmony, a craft-focused intiative where we collaborated with the Refugee & Migrant Network to address the challenge of integration for the growing migrant and refugee community through embroidery workshops, providing a safe and welcoming space for healing and community-building. This craft-based intervention served as an opportunity for wellbeing to learn, share, and connect. With embroidery’s powerful therapeutic benefits, we believed this could help them find comfort and community through creativity. Our team was shortlisted and was among the top-6 finalists.
